I read on IRC today (#mythtv-users) NVidia has just released support for VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix), aka support for their "PureVideo HD" feature in recent chipsets, decoding h.264, VC-1, MPEG2, and MPEG-1 in hardware. A great jump forward for people wanting to play HD video without getting the latest and greatest 3GHz+ dual-core CPU’s.
More in the MythTV users list archives.
A pity that you of course still need their binary driver, but they released a whole bunch of docs, header files and patches for a bunch of programs such as ffmpeg and mplayer.
